Chi Omega

alpha chapter

The Chi Omega (ΧΩ) Fraternity was established in 1895 and has continued to flourish as the largest and most prominent women’s fraternal organization in the nation. With such a network of women, each member of our Sisterhood has immense support as we commit to our founding purposes: Friendship, High Standards of Personnel, Sincere Learning and Creditable Scholarship, Career Development, Participation in Campus Activities, Community Service. The Alpha Chapter at UW is the 17th Chi Omega chapter.

Chi Omega was nationally founded on April 5, 1895, and the Alpha Chapter at UW—established on April 16, 1909—holds the distinction of being the 17th Chi Omega chapter. The chapter is represented by its classic cardinal and straw colors, the white carnation flower, and the owl symbol, which represents wisdom and knowledge. Its motto, “Womanly always, discouraged never,” reflects resilience, strength, and grace.

Chi Omega is guided by its founding purposes:
Friendship, High Standards of Personnel, Sincere Learning and Creditable Scholarship, Career Development, Participation in Campus Activities, and Community Service.

These values shape every aspect of the member experience. Women in Chi Omega are deeply involved on campus, striving for academic excellence while also taking on leadership roles and contributing to the UW community. The chapter fosters a supportive and empowering sisterhood where members are encouraged to grow, achieve, and uplift one another.

Chi Omega is nationally partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, supporting children with critical illnesses. The Alpha Chapter actively participates in fundraising and service efforts that bring hope and joy to families, reflecting the organization’s commitment to meaningful, heartfelt impact.
