Sam’s law
Washington State's updated hazing law, also known as “Sam’s Law”, went into effect this past year. The law was named after Sam Martinez, a freshman student from Washington State University (WSU) who died from alcohol poisoning while being a new member in 2019. The law includes requirements around hazing prevention and reduction at institutions of higher education. In compliance with Sam’s Law, fraternities and sororities at Washington universities must provide notice of the previous five years of all findings of violations of anti-hazing policies, state or federal laws relating to hazing, alcohol, drugs, sexual assault, or physical assault, or the institution's code of conduct against the local chapter on their websites. The UW Panhellenic Executive Board stands firmly against hazing and strongly in support of this law. Read more about Sam’s Law here.
