The Phi Sigma Rho (Phi Rho) chapter at the University of Washington is a unique and empowering sisterhood designed specifically for women in engineering and engineering technology fields. As the first social sorority of its kind, Phi Sigma Rho provides a supportive community where members can thrive academically while building strong, lasting friendships. The chapter is centered on collaboration, encouragement, and shared ambition, creating a network of women who uplift one another both personally and professionally.

Phi Sigma Rho was nationally founded on September 24, 1984, and established at UW in 2002. Represented by its wine red and silver colors and the orchid as its official flower, the chapter reflects both strength and individuality. Its motto, “Together we build the future,” highlights the organization’s focus on innovation, teamwork, and empowering women to succeed in traditionally underrepresented fields.

At its core, Phi Sigma Rho is built on scholarship and empowerment. Members are deeply committed to academic success, supporting one another through rigorous coursework, study groups, and shared academic experiences. The chapter fosters an environment where collaboration is prioritized over competition, allowing members to grow together while navigating challenging engineering and technical programs. This shared academic focus creates a strong bond among members and prepares them for future careers in STEM fields.

Phi Sigma Rho women are actively involved across campus, particularly within engineering organizations, research opportunities, and professional development initiatives. The chapter encourages members to take on leadership roles both within the sorority and in their academic communities, helping them build confidence, communication skills, and professional experience that will benefit them beyond college.

Service is an important aspect of the Phi Sigma Rho experience. The chapter supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, contributing to efforts focused on blood cancer research, patient support, and advocacy. Through fundraising and volunteer work, members are able to make a meaningful impact while staying connected to causes that extend beyond their academic and campus lives.

Phi Sigma Rho offers a strong national network of women in STEM, providing mentorship, career connections, and continued support long after graduation. This lifelong sisterhood ensures that members not only succeed during their time at UW but also continue to grow and lead in their professional fields, embodying the values of collaboration, innovation, and empowerment.
